My father said, “Don’t just be labeled as a black man. Be more than that.” Meaning, don’t be in these streets – just go to school and get your education.

Boys to Black Men is a project that invites viewers into the intimate lives of emerging black men. It is an effort to expand the narratives of young black men in America beyond media representation—by returning “the voice” to its subject: the young black male.

In the title “Boys to Black Men,” the emphasis is placed on “Black” to acknowledge to some and affirm to others that there are distinct life experiences native only to young black men who are navigating the path to manhood.

Through question and answer, each young male candidly vocalizes his experiences as a young black man living in America.
